SUPPORTING AUSTRALIA’S PREPAREDNESS FOR AFRICAN SWINE FEVER
PhD Opportunity:

African Swine Fever (ASF) has spread globally, and Australia’s closest neighbours, Timor Leste, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea are now infected. This increases the risk of an incursion to Australia in either feral or domestic pigs. Understanding how disease could spread in feral pigs and the subsequent risks to domestic pigs is important to develop strategies to protect the domestic pig industry.

This project will investigate risk pathways for ASF spread in Australia to develop biosecurity strategies to protect the Australian domestic pig industry.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE PART OF A TEAM CONDUCTING RESEARCH TO SUPPORT AUSTRALIA BEING BETTER PREPARED AGAINST AFRICAN SWINE FEVER?
We seek a highly motivated PhD candidate with a high level Honours or Masters qualification or equivalent in the following field/s: veterinary science, animal science, epidemiology.

The project will be based at Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga) although a suitable candidate could work from home. Some travel to research sites will be required. The candidate will develop skills in data collection, risk assessment, disease spread modelling techniques and epidemiologic methods, as well an understanding of biosecurity. The candidate will also build industry and government relationships, and develop skills in communication to scientific and non-scientific audiences.

Successful candidates will also be linked into the Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation (GCAI www.csu.edu.au/research/grahamcentre), a collaborative alliance between CSU and NSW DPI. The Graham Centre provides administrative support to projects, and links researchers with industry and the farming community through research and engagement activities.
